Smart Guide To Poker

More than 100 million people worldwide play poker regularly.  Whether it is professionally or as a hobby, poker proves to be extremely addictive.  For some, it can serve as a quick-fix for financial difficulties, but for others, it only adds to them.  If you want to come out on top you need to understand how to play smart.

The game of poker is definitely one of give-and-take.  If you’re lucky, you may win some, but if the chips don’t fall in your favor then you may lose even more.  Poker requires both skill and patience, and although that concept may seem simple, many forget that it is still a game of chance.  Even the craftiest and most cautious of individuals can gamble more than they should resulting in an early exit from the table.  Many amateur players quickly find themselves at odds with upper-level players, so although the field may appear to be even early on, reality will quickly  prove otherwise.

The Hunter vs  Hunted

You should be prepared -at least early on- to be considered prey by those around you.  If your opponents see you as an easy target, they will waste no time in going for the kill.  It’s not a blood sport but it can become a matter of the hunter versus  hunted.  If you donate enough of your time to learning all the tricks of poker then the experience gained should be able to hold your own.  There’s no place to go but up, so you can only get better.

A key to smart poker is the ability to bluff, an art many have tried but only a few have mastered.  If you don't show emotion and your opponents will have a hard time reading your expressions and difficulty guessing your cards.  Avoiding eye contact with other players and focusing on your cards will prevent potential distractions.  Whether you are dealt a good hand or not, you should  never change your facial expression.  The more of your opponents you can fool, the more money you can win.

If you plan on becoming an impact player, you must first learn the following tricks of the trade: (1) folding; (2) betting; (3) calling; (4) checking; and (5) raising the blind.

Hey Wally,
Try combining a bluff with being in the right position to bluff. Those bets that come after a series of pre-flop folds is a great way to get the other players thinking you may have the only good hand, which results in more small pair folds than you could imagine.
Also, in an early position I always raise the blind 3X when bluffing so that I can get the other players to believe I have top pair or better post flop.
