Awareness

Through an extensive display of tactics and teachings, you’ll learn to become more aware of your environment, how to trust your instincts, how to escape and how to fight back.  You’ll also learn that any object, big or small, can be used as a weapon against attack.  If you fight back remember is to stay calm.  The element of surprise and knowing your attacker’s vulnerable spots may give you the upper hand in the struggle.  By continuously practicing the techniques outlined by your instructor, you’ll become better prepared for a possible attack.

Attacking

The groin, eyes, ears, nose and throat (acronym: G-E-E-N-T) are the most vulnerable parts on an anyone’s body.  Knowing when, where and how to injure your attacker may just be the key to disarming an opponent.  Because it is easy to deflect and/or escape, you should never come out swinging.  Your movements should be poised and direct, because this will allow you to put all your strength behind the blow(s).  If performed correctly and timely, a gouge of the eyes, a swift kick to the groin and/or a sharp object to the ear may ensure your safety and render the assailant useless. Now is not the time to fight clean; do what you need to do.  Furthermore, retaliation in the form of a strike to the solar plexus, throat, face and/or a shoulder joint may actually force your attacker into retreat mode.  This will allow you to turn the tables and possibly switch roles in the attack.

Tips

If you show signs of weakness, then you’re more prone to being victimized.  Living, walking and/or driving alone also increases your chances of being targeted.  When choosing their victim(s), criminals will target weaker looking men – so walk with confidence.  Regardless of one’s race, age and/or gender, it is important to remember that an attack can happen to anyone, anywhere at anytime.  There is safety in numbers, so only align yourself with people you trust.  Lastly, one of the best forms of defense is your voice.  During an attack, call out to other civilians if you can and draw as much attention to yourself as possible.  Get the attention of anyone you can, so many people carry cell phones now that a passerby could easily summon the police if you get their attention.

If you have been attacked, robbed or victimized it is important to report it. Often, when you have a wife/girlfriend/daughter who has been a victim of rape it is hard to face facts and report the crime; you need to man up and face reality – reporting these crimes is extremely important. Crime is a methodical game of cat and mouse. Really.  A victim is seldom targeted by chance.  The intent to commit the act is usually mapped out over a certain degree of time.  The perpetrator may watch his victim before finally making his move and rarely does he commit a crime in the same place twice.  We may never know all the reasons a person is driven to kill or rob. Power and status will always divide us into groups.  Crime is statistically dominated by those less privileged and/or those mentally incapable of knowing the difference between right and wrong. Whatever the case may be it is important that you know how to handle yourself in the event.
