How To Throw A Punch

Page 1 2
A HOOK punch is performed by swinging either the dominant or weak hand at a 90 degree angle. Because of its style, this method normally aims at the chin, but it can also used to strike your opponent's liver and/or kidneys. By shifting one’s footing and coming up with a horizontal strike, the positioning behind the blow can increase in power; however, it can also make you vulnerable between punches.
An UPPERCUT is performed by attacking your opponent with an upward motion. To catch your opponent by surprise, the dominant fist strikes at close range and targets the chin. If the punch is not performed at close range, the result will likely not be effective because your opponent will have time to retaliate and/or block the incoming strike.
When Throwing A Punch
You should always start out by connecting the target with the first two knuckles of the hand (the ones above the index and middle fingers), because your other fingers are more vulnerable to dislocation and breaks. Keep your back and head straight at all times. You should never lean into a punch because it can unbalance you and open you to an attack from your opponent. Instead, bring your fist back and then throw from the hip - this will help you increase the speed and force behind the blow while also keeping you balanced. Throw most of your key blows with your dominant hand, which is the stronger of the two, because more force can be applied. Twisting your forearm and fist in unison when throwing your punch can also direct more power into your punch. Open your opponent up by striking with direct and thorough jabs.
Take A Class
The best way to prepare for any potential altercation is to train. When used together, brain and brawn will always be your winning combination. A class or sparing session with a qualified individual will give you the training, technique and practice you need. It will also prepare your body for moving targets and for the 'opposing opposite reaction' of a punch - unlike shadow boxing. Mixed martial arts and boxing are great methods for perfecting your swing and getting into top physical shape. Through these classes, you will better learn how to position your body, how to form a proper fist and how to throw an effective punch. You will also be able to identify weaknesses in your current technique and become educated in the various types of punches to add to your arsenal.
Final Thoughts
Never go out seeking a fight and before any altercation look for a way out; you only have the right to 'defend' your life and the lives of others - if you have to. Before throwing up your dukes, explore your strengths and weaknesses. Without knowing how to properly defend yourself, you’ll only be setting yourself up for a beating. Learning how to throw an effective punch will increase both your odds and performance. Anyone can throw a punch, but without the right techniques and form you will not be very effective. Remember, the best offense may be a good defense, so learn how to shield yourself as well - your fist and face will thank you for it.
