'Edge of Darkness', a drama thriller by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, Casino Royale), is based on the eponymous 80's series. The movie is arguably more drama than thriller, but does have a few redeeming action scenes. A mostly typical cop's revenge story, Edge of Darkness uses a tried and tested formula that is sure to please.

Plot

Mel Gibson makes a return to acting as Boston Police detective Tom Craven, who is fighting to avenge the death of his daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic). Her murder is initially thought to be a mistake; Craven presumes, as does everyone around him, that the killer was after him. Clues quickly begin to appear, Craven starts to learn more about his daughter's role in a nuclear facility, her involvement with activists, and he realizes that she was indeed being targeted.

Impression

The main cast gave a great performance, with Ray Winstone being the notable mention here. The interaction between Jedburgh and Craven was entertaining, and the fact that Jedburgh's true allegiance is unclear makes the character interesting.

The movie portrays the negative side of government through conspiracy, corporate coverup, and crooked politicians.

The Verdict

The plot doesn't have any real twists and is highly predictable, but delivers a satisfying results nonetheless. There is some startling action in the movie, but not enough when compared with the amount of dramatic 'hallucinations' that Craven experiences. Overall a decent movie, weighing in at 3.5 stars.
