Angels and Airwaves: Atom Willard

SM: Who is the 'hothead' in the group?
AW: Boy, I don’t know. I think they would probably say me because I am the oldest and I just don’t have time for these whippersnappers and their bullshit. I dunno. I guess it would be me – at least if I say that, no one else can get mad.
SM: Has the band ever been in a fight? Over what?
AW: We don’t really fight. We do have heated discussions about things because everybody does have strong opinions. Everybody has strong experiences to draw from. There is no way to accomplish the things we are trying to do without having a difference of opinion or without having some confrontations. But, nobody’s opinions are discounted, nothing is considered more important than anything else. The best idea is going to win. We do vote on a lot of stuff. At the end of the day, the only time we do blow up is when things are done without all of us being involved. SM: What’s the best thing about performing? AW: The best thing about performing is performing. I love to play the drums. It is my first true love and I never get tired of doing it so be able to go on tour and perform every night is a gift. I really am so fortunate to be able to do that. The best thing is enjoying music with people who are super excited to see you play and watching them dance and freakout and have a good time; there’s no feeling like it.
SM: We’re a men’s general interest magazine, is something you would like men around the world to know? Any advice for them to live by?
AW: Well, there are a lot of different categories. There is the single man, the married man, the young man, you know, so it is hard to say. I think if you have never really been in love you should try it out. If you don’t want to have a crazy life ahead of you, don’t get girls pregnant…and stay clean, buddy!
SM: Any last words?
AW: No. I really hope to not give my last words for a few more years.
