All American Rejects: Mike Kennerty

SM: What type of connection do you hope your fans will have with your music?
MK: We just like to have fun and we want people to just feel the energy with us. We go out there and we just kill ourselves on stage. There have definitely been many bloody nights.
SM: Literally bloody?
MK: Literally. We just put everything into it, so if we don’t get any reciprocation it just bums us out. We want our audience to feel as much energy as we are putting out there. That’s what we want.
SM: How has the band changed and, even more so, how have each of you changed since achieving mainstream success?
MK: We? I think we are pretty much the same guys we have always been. We grew up in Oklahoma so it’s pretty humble parts of the world and we have kind of always taken pride in that. We have kept ourselves from L.A. lifestyles and all that junk. So I would like to think we are still the same dudes we’ve always been; we’ve tried to not let success get to our heads. Also, me Chris and Nick live in Oklahoma so it’s still home – we love it. We don’t buy into the lifestyle that a lot of other bands who achieve mainstream success do. Growing up, we played garages and house parties and any thing we could really get. We started touring and somehow things snowballed and now we are playing sold out arenas. It’s crazy.
SM: So you still live in Oklahoma, do people who knew you growing up treat you any differently now? How do you react to that?
MK: No. Actually, in Oklahoma I probably get less recognition than anywhere else which is kind of nice I guess. Everyone is the same I guess. Our friends, they are all the same except they are all married and have kids now - since we started. But other than that, it’s great. It is still really humbling to go home.
SM: Fame or Fortune? Why?
MK: I would go with Fortune. Yeah. Fame is, meh, whatever. Yeah, I don’t care if everyone knows who I am but it’s nice to not have to work again. Over the last few years I have been building up a studio in my house. I don’t have many hobbies outside of music so I will probably put most of my money towards that and putting out more records.
SM: You guys have just signed a band called ‘The Upwelling?’
MK: Yes. Me and Tyson have a label called Edmond Records and we signed a band called ‘The Upwelling.’ We’re excited. They are a great band from New York and we have been friends with them for years. Tyson produced a couple songs on the record and it all came together, finally. It’s a really good album so check it out.
SM: For sure. So who is the 'hothead' in the group? The clown?
MK: Gaylor for sure. Our drummer Chris; he is the hothead. He just gets pissed at the drop of a hat and he will not stop complaining for hours. Tyson for sure is the clown. Yeah, he’s gotten into this thing, on this tour so far, of covering himself in glitter-it’s, uh, interesting for sure. He coats himself in sunscreen and he just pours it on – it’s scarier than it is pretty.
